She turned things around in 6 months!

April 2021: After almost 5 years at her first job Swati was serving her last day there.

She was working at a multi-national consulting company all these years. Her new job was in a smaller boutique consulting firm. A few weeks into the new company, she realised that this wasn’t a great fit — culturally & from a long term perspective. Tried whatever she could internally, all in vain. Decided the best way would be to leave.

This was a brave decision.

She took an even braver one along with this.

Working in consulting had happened to her, she never wanted to (does anyone ever want to?). This time, she decided to not blindly jump on to the next similar opportunity. She decided to truly spend time finding her interests. As simple as this may sound, this isn’t easy. Doing this is scary, to say the least.

A roller coaster ride awaited her. She held on.

For the next 6 months, she worked hard on -

  • finding the domain & the role she’d be interested in
  • building new skills set required for the role, finding & articulating existing overlapping skills

Doing all this while rejecting opportunities that were similar to previous roles requires one to have an unfaltering self-belief. She did this for 6 months.

Feb 2022: Tonight would be the last of those long nights. Tomorrow, she joins in a role she knew nothing about, at a company she knew nothing about 6 months before today.

Looking back we’ll always feel that this was the most obvious thing to do. It definitely was, but most obvious is not necessarily most easy.

Worth doing? I’d say yes!
