Don’t let anyone tell you to take it easy

Popular culture talks a lot about not slogging, not putting in long hours & taking it easy.

While it’s perfectly fine to do so, make sure that you choose that for yourself. I’ve seen that people who put in those hours (including myself) try to fit into the “take it easy” narrative. Sometimes against their natural tendencies, which leads to an inner conflict.

The generic idea of the work-life balance is always skewed. It always somehow boils down to doing less work.

Putting in more hours is not the solution to everything.

But it sure is the solution sometimes & for some people. Yes, productivity declines beyond a certain time. Though this limit depends on the kind of work & the individual. One discovers their limit only after they break it while being aware of their work quality.

To let an external narrative define that limit is a flawed concept in my opinion.

Understand what works for you & accept that.

Acceptance is the key here. When pressing hard on any of the levers in the work-life equation, you’ll have to let go of certain things. At the same time, you gain some other things. You should set priorities for yourself.

The idea is not to romanticise the so-called hustle culture but is to not romanticise the opposite too.

Accept what works for you, choose your priorities & be aware of how the narrative shapes you.
